Targeted Professional Development: DOK/Aspire

July 9-12, 2018, 8:30-3:30 daily

Increasing Rigor and Complexity

The Depth of Knowledge (DOK) model for evaluating the complexity and rigor of objectives, learning tasks, and assessment items is new to most teachers.  Yet, DOK is being used by ACT and ACT Aspire to evaluate their assessment items.

Thinking Process

While Bloom’s taxonomy gives teachers a method of evaluating learning objectives, what students are required to learn as a result of instruction, DOK levels describe the thinking process the student must use to complete the objective, task, or assessment item.

Implementing DOK

For students to gain proficiency in responding to DOK assessment items, educators will require training in recognizing the 4 DOK levels, constructing objectives and assessment items, and helping students learn to respond to all 4 DOK levels.  .

Don’t Try to Teach to the Test!

The ACT Aspire and ACT are not aligned with Arkansas’ content standards.  They are aligned to college and career ready standards.  This Targeted Professional Development (TPD) is not intended to help educators “teach to the test.”  This TPDl is designed to help educators:

  • Increase the complexity and rigor of objectives, tasks, and assessment items through the use of Webb’s DOK model.
  • Promote and assess student-learning at high cognitive levels.
  • Become school leaders in development and evaluation of rigorous curriculum, objectives and assessment.

Details

This Targeted Professional Development consists of a 4-day face-to-face training and a semester to a year of follow-up.  During the face-to-face training, participants will learn about the 4 levels of DOK and develop assessments and integrated projects to use in their classroom.  Throughout the school year (one or two semesters) the participant will grow in developing DOK tasks and assessment items and helping students respond to them.  Participants will continue to collaborate with each other and with other educators in their area (or building), sharing what they have learned.
