About SAU Poultry Science Program

Poultry is the leading agriculture industry in Arkansas, and SAU’s Poultry Science program prepares students for careers in the ever-growing and changing industry.  Having the most state-of-the-art poultry facilities with the most up-to-date computerized technology for poultry production, SAU ensures that students pursuing a poultry science degree are prepared for the real-world challenges associated with the poultry industry.

At SAU department of agriculture, we understand the importance of hand-on interactive activities and individualized training to prepare students not only in the scientific side but also in the technical side. Therefore, poultry laboratories are conducted to learn the scientific and the technical aspects of management, production, physiology, nutrition, processing, and poultry health and welfare to make sure that our students are provided with all the professional tools required to excel in the real world.

Our poultry facilities are divided in 7 sections: the broiler breeder building, the broiler building, the egg storage building, the hatchery room, the feed storage room, the processing room, and the composter building. Students in the poultry science program are taught about the entire production chain: (1) broiler breeders and the production of fertile eggs, (2) evaluation of egg quality and hatchability, (3) broiler chicken production, (4) broiler processing, (5) feed formulation, (6) broiler processing, (7) waste disposal.

Besides the hands-on activities during the class and the lab, students at SAU department of agriculture in the poultry science major also can apply to obtain a job at the poultry facilities to enrich their knowledge and experience.

Students working at the SAU poultry facilities will learn different aspects of poultry research that will prepare them whether they decide to work for the industry or to pursue a higher academic degree (master’s or doctorate) in another university after their undergraduate degree has been bestowed. Poultry Science students can easily be connected to other Universities if they decide to pursue a higher degree and become scientists/researchers.

Students in our program are exposed to research that is presented in regional and international conferences. All students are encouraged to conduct research as a way to improve their knowledge and opportunities.
